Thomas Island to St Bees island

By byronandkath

Leaving Thomas Island around 9am we had light winds & calm seas all day, so to assist we motor sailed for a lot of the day ( that is when you have the sails up & the engine on at the same time ). We read a bit & David even got in a nap.

We averaged around 5 knots.

We had lunch on the go, being a substantial salad sandwich ( actually I had two ) & arrived at St Bees Island around 5:30pm, where we picked up a bouye in the narrow chanel between Kelswick Island.

We had travelled around 30 nautical miles .

Between 5:30 pm & 6:30 pm we sat in the cockpit eating sayos with cheese, tomates & olives while we watched the sun set over the Islands. Another beautiful day.

A small plane flew overhead, so low I thought it was about to crash land, when David pointed out a small private run way on Kelswick Island . Kelswick has a few houses on it & seems someone was on there way home from work. That sure is one way to miss peak hour. Hope he didn’t forget the milk.

For dinner we had curried chicken & David brought with him limed pickles which he buys from a local chinese food shop, which where delicious.

It’s now 10 pm & the wind has picked up to a healthy 15 knots from the NE.

I am hoping the wind stays on this direction because tomorrow we need to sail 65 miles to Percy islands which will be a big day. We plan to up anchor by 5:30 am & have breakfast while under sail.

Here is a photo of our approach to St Bees Isand.
